Procedure details

Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA)

Endovenous laser surgery for varicose veins using the EVLA method is a modern, minimally invasive treatment with high effectiveness. Its advantage is that the vein does not need to be physically removed – it is closed from the inside using laser heat.

Procedure overview

EVLA is one of the modern methods used to treat varicose veins. The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis, is gentle on the surrounding tissue, and offers the patient quick recovery, minimal discomfort, and a very good cosmetic as well as functional result.

Endovenous laser ablation

  • Endovenous laser surgery for varicose veins using the EVLA method is a modern, minimally invasive treatment with high effectiveness.
  • Its advantage is that the vein does not need to be physically removed – it is closed from the inside using laser heat.
  • The main benefits of EVLA are quick recovery, an almost painless course, minimal risk of complications, and an excellent cosmetic result.
  • The method is suitable for various stages of varicose veins, including cases with pain, swelling or aesthetic discomfort.

Procedure course

EVLA works by inserting a thin laser fibre into the affected vein. The procedure is performed under ultrasound guidance and, during treatment, the patient usually feels only mild warmth or pressure.

Insertion of the laser fiber: EVLA works by inserting a thin laser fiber into the affected vein. Laser light is converted into heat, which closes the vein from the inside.
Ultrasound guidance: The procedure is performed under ultrasound guidance, making it highly precise and gentle. During treatment, the patient usually feels only mild warmth or pressure.
Procedure duration: The procedure itself takes approximately 30–60 minutes, depending on the extent of the condition.
Compression after the procedure: After the procedure, the patient puts on compression stockings and can leave immediately.

Examples of results

Before-and-after photographs help illustrate the change in the appearance of the lower limbs after EVLA treatment. The result may vary depending on the extent of venous involvement and the individual healing process.

Recommendations before and after the procedure

Before the procedure, a specialist examination is necessary and after the treatment it is important to follow the doctor’s recommendations. Proper preparation and aftercare help ensure a smooth recovery.

Before the procedure

  • Before the procedure itself, it is necessary to undergo a consultation with a vascular specialist who will determine whether EVLA is suitable based on the clinical examination, ultrasound imaging of the venous system, overall health condition, and medical history.
  • The patient will receive all the important information, details about the procedure, and aftercare. If EVLA is suitable, the doctor will propose an exact treatment plan.

After the procedure

  • Recovery after EVLA is short and straightforward. The patient goes home immediately after the procedure, wears the recommended compression stockings according to the doctor’s instructions, and usually returns to normal activities the next day.
  • Common side effects such as mild redness, bruising or pressure in the treated area usually resolve spontaneously. The doctor will provide precise instructions for home care.

Differences between EVLA and TEVLA

EVLA (Endovenous Laser Ablation)

  • It is a minimally invasive procedure in which a laser fibre is inserted into the affected vein and heat damages the inner wall of the vein, leading to its closure.
  • It is most commonly used to treat the main superficial truncal veins (the great and small saphenous veins).

Who is EVLA suitable for?

  • Patients with varicose veins caused by insufficiency of the main truncal vein.
  • Patients without significant involvement of side branches or with a smaller extent of disease.
  • Also suitable for patients who want a procedure with quick recovery and minimal scarring.

TEVLA (Total Endovenous Laser Ablation)

  • An extended version of EVLA – it combines treatment of the truncal veins as well as their side branches and varicosities within a single procedure.
  • In the “total” version, the truncal veins, their side branches and varicosities are treated, so no additional procedure is needed.
  • The procedure is performed under local or general anaesthesia.

Who is TEVLA suitable for?

  • Patients with more extensive varicose veins where side branches are also affected.
  • Patients who want a comprehensive solution in one procedure.
  • Suitable in cases of recurrent problems or recurrence after previous procedures.
