Procedure details

Total Endovenous Laser Ablation (TEVLA)

TEVLA (Total Endovenous Laser Ablation) is a modern, minimally invasive and comprehensive method of treating varicose veins that uses laser energy to close affected veins. It is an innovative procedure that combines treatment of the main superficial truncal veins as well as side branches and varicosities within a single session.

Procedure overview

TEVLA is suitable for patients with more extensive varicose veins where treating only the main vein is not sufficient. The advantage of this method is that it allows comprehensive treatment of multiple affected areas during a single procedure while maintaining a gentle course and quick recovery.

Total endovenous laser ablation

  • TEVLA (Total Endovenous Laser Ablation) is a modern, minimally invasive and comprehensive method of treating varicose veins that uses laser energy to close affected veins.
  • It is an innovative procedure that combines treatment of the main superficial truncal veins, namely the great and small saphenous veins, as well as side branches and varicosities within a single procedure.
  • It is suitable for patients with more extensive varicose veins, where side branches are also affected, in recurrent cases or after previous procedures.
  • The advantage is a comprehensive solution in one procedure while maintaining a gentle course and a very good cosmetic and functional result.

How does the TEVLA procedure work?

The TEVLA procedure is designed so that the patient goes through the necessary examination, the procedure itself and the subsequent recovery as comfortably as possible. Thanks to its precise approach, it can achieve high effectiveness even in more extensive cases.

Insertion of the laser fiber: TEVLA works by inserting a thin laser fiber into the affected vein. Laser light is converted into heat, which closes the vein from the inside.
Ultrasound guidance: The procedure is performed under ultrasound guidance, making it highly precise and gentle. During treatment, the patient usually feels only mild warmth or pressure.
Procedure duration: The procedure itself takes approximately 30–60 minutes, depending on the extent of the condition.
Compression after the procedure: After the procedure, the patient puts on compression stockings and can leave immediately.

Examples of results

Before-and-after photographs help illustrate the change in the condition of the lower limbs after TEVLA treatment. The extent of improvement depends on the type of venous involvement and the individual healing process.

Main benefits of TEVLA

TEVLA is intended for patients who need more extensive and comprehensive treatment of varicose veins. Its main benefits include a high success rate, minimal strain on the body and a quick return to everyday life.

  • Safe and gentle – minimal burden on the body, with no need for incisions or stitches.
  • Quick recovery – most patients return to normal activities within 1–2 days.
  • No hospital stay – the procedure is performed on an outpatient basis and the patient goes home afterwards.
  • Excellent cosmetic result – no scars, incisions or bruising.
  • Minimal discomfort – the procedure is performed under local anaesthesia, or under general anaesthesia if the patient wishes.
  • High success rate – the sealed vein does not reopen and the risk of recurrence is minimal.
  • Suitable even in summer – the procedure can be performed all year round, including the summer months.

Recommendations before and after the procedure

Before the procedure, a specialist examination is necessary and after the treatment it is important to follow the doctor’s instructions. Proper preparation and aftercare help ensure a smooth recovery.

Before the procedure

  • No need to come fasting; the patient may have breakfast or lunch depending on the time of the procedure.
  • It is recommended to come in comfortable clothing.
  • You should bring compression stockings, which are usually recommended for several days after the procedure.
  • The doctor must be informed about all medications being taken and any health limitations.

After the procedure

  • Immediate mobility – the patient goes home after the procedure and can walk normally.
  • Quick return to everyday activities – most patients return to work the next day.
  • Sport and physical strain – it is recommended to avoid demanding sports and prolonged standing for 1–2 weeks.
  • Compression stockings – wear them as recommended by the doctor, usually for several days.
  • Mild bruising or tenderness – these are common at the treated area and usually subside within a few days.
  • Follow-up examination – the doctor checks that the vein has been successfully closed.

Differences between EVLA and TEVLA

Differences between EVLA and TEVLA

  • EVLA (Endovenous Laser Ablation)
  • A minimally invasive procedure in which a laser fibre is inserted into the affected vein and heat damages the inner wall of the vein, leading to its closure.
  • It is most commonly used for the treatment of the main superficial veins, namely the great and small saphenous veins.
  • TEVLA (Total Endovenous Laser Ablation)
  • An extended version of EVLA – it combines treatment of the main superficial truncal veins as well as their side branches and varicosities within a single procedure.
  • The procedure is performed under local or general anaesthesia, with the option of payment in instalments.

Who is EVLA suitable for and who is TEVLA suitable for?

  • EVLA is suitable for patients with a less extensive form of varicose veins who do not have complications or associated health problems.
  • TEVLA is ideal for patients with more extensive varicose veins, recurrent problems, a higher risk of complications, cosmetic requirements for a scar-free result, and the need for a quick return to work or everyday life.
