- It is a traditional method of varicose vein treatment that is particularly suitable for smaller superficial veins or varicose veins. This non-surgical procedure is performed on an outpatient basis.
- The advantage i
- s the possibility to perform the procedure under ultrasound control.
- It is a safe and effective way to get rid of uncomfortable and unaesthetic varicose veins. The results of the procedure are very satisfactory and patients can quickly return to their normal activities.
- You will receive a compression stocking and 50g Lioton gel free of charge in our vascular surgery clinic as part of the cost of the procedure.
The course of the procedure
- In outpatient treatment, the doctor injects a sclerosing solution into the affected vein, and the solution can be in the form of a liquid or foam.
- The sclerosing solution results in a controlled chemical action on the inner lining of the vein, leading to its gradual ‘plugging’ and closure.
The procedure is carried out with a fine needle, and the patient feels only a gentle prick (similar to a blood draw). - An integral part of the treatment immediately after the application is a compression bandage with an elastic bandage or compression stocking or a combination of both.
- Both limbs can be treated in one visit.

Before the procedure
- You are advised to increase your fluid intake and arrive nourished. Walking before the procedure is also beneficial.
- Sclerotherapy is not suitable for pregnant women, nursing mothers or those with acute inflammatory conditions. It is also not recommended for patients with deep vein thrombosis or allergies to the sclerosing solution.
After the procedure
- Immediately after the procedure, the patient needs to take an active walk, at least 3 kilometres.
- As part of the sclerotherapy process, a compression stocking is immediately stretched and worn for a minimum of 4 days/24 hours, after which compression therapy is recommended during the day for an additional month.
- Possible complications include the formation of so-called scleromas – blood clots that can form in the damaged vein. As a consequence, so-called hyperpigmentation may occur, but this should disappear within at least six months.
